Konferencja Wikimania 2010 w Gdańsku — 9,10,11 lipca 2010 r.

Dlaczego poza projektami Wiki?

Areas for improvement

Congratulations on your successful bid. Here are some points in the current plans that could be improved:

  • Hostel availability. See if you can reserve blocks of rooms in the nearest hostels, and get a proposed group rate for the hotels. It's more fun for most people if they can have breakfast with / travel with friends to/from the conference.
  • Connecting flight availability. There are inexpensive connecting flights to Gdansk, but some of them need to be sought out. Budget travellers will have some extra work to find the best low-cost flights. See if you can work out a partnership with an airline to make it easier for budget travellers to find good arrangements, either through a major European hub or through an airline-specific hub (such as Stansted or Frankfurt-Hahn for Ryanair). This may make attendance harder for low-budget Wikimedians from outside of Europe. See if you can find a way to offset this inconvenience.
It might help to greatly expand the wikitravel sections on the city, saving time for many people. Also, fill the gaps in this article and other languages will follow...
  • Split venue. Consider a plan where the entire main conference is fit into the main venue, and specific other events or half-day/full-day tracks are in the secondary one. Look into live communication b/t the lobbies in the two venues (this makes the distance seem much smaller, and helps attendees 'serendipitously' find something interesting at the other spacce. Talk to an architect - there are similarities with building of that diameter for good flow of human traffic. Consider having one commonly-requested thing (a lovely schedule-board; a snack station) in each building, so that people have reason to move back and forth.
  • Wireless. Come up with a couple of plans, and a fallback. Murphy's law strikes hardest here. If you are able to permanently upgrade the network of a building on the island, consider doing it with a city improvement grant. Look into setting up a mesh network for the island & surroundings.
Check the nearby hostels and hotels. Do they have wireless? If not, can this be fixed? They have business reasons to add capacity (perhaps with some expert neutral advice). If you get support for covering the entire neighborhood with a mesh network, this problem may be reduced to hosting a node at each of these locations.

  • Translation and communication. See if you can provide a steady flow of work for translators, especially considering the existing interest of the local interpreters. (how fast can this site be available in 2 or 3 languages?) Alexandria and Taipei both had a difficult time including people who didn't speak the primary local language on the planning/volunteer teams [and did most of the planning in that language until a few months before the conf]. You already have interested folks like Harrypotter... see if you can include them from the start.
